Crime is fun

— Parker

With a new team member on board plus the arrival of Hardison's genius foster sister, the team heads to Panama to pull an elaborate heist before an evil billionaire can get his money and flee to a non-extradition country.

The Client[]

This episode continues from {{ep|101R}], but now the team has no client. Instead, they pursue their previous mark, Fletcher Maxwell, from Boston to Panama as he looks for his last stash of money.

The Mark[]

Ryan Corbett of Sentinel Offshore

Summary[]

The team heads to Panama to continue their con to take down Fletcher Maxwell. During the time since their move, Fletcher Maxwell forced Harry out of his job. During the job, Hardison is distracted by his other work. Eliot tells him the head chef can’t be chopping lettuce.

Eliot notices later that a drone is stalking them, and they track the drone back to his food truck. Inside the food truck, they find Breanna, Hardison’s foster sister. Breanna begs to stay and help them out, wanting to put her skills to good use. She grew up hearing the stories of the Leverage crew. Parker is hesitant at first to let Breanna stay, but Hardison convinces her to let Breanna join. He tells her that Breanna’s getting into the same stuff he was at her age and that she just needs someone to help point her in the right direction.

The team’s plan to take down Maxwell is to take his money from a secured vault that holds others’ bad money as well. Harry finds them a building to use as their base while on the con. The team blows up all the money in the safe and takes down Maxwell. After the con, Hardison buys the building Harry found so the team can use it as a new HQ. Hardison tells them he has to leave to go help out in Sri Lanka. While Parker is sad, she understands that he has to go. Harry offers to stay on the team as their inside man, as he knows how the corrupt businesspeople operate, having helped them in the past.

Episode Notes[]

  • The Maxwell family money is stored in Vault 2, Box 5150. This seems to be a reference to the 1980's rock band Van Halen, which released a song titled "Panama" in 1984, then released an album titled "5150" two years later.
  • This episode includes the first shout-out to Doctor Who, a favorite reference from the original series. When Sophie and Hardison confront a corrupt judge in the courthouse as MI-6 agents, they introduce themselves as Jo Grant (one of the Third Doctor's companions) and Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart (a Brigadier general who frequently worked with the early Doctors.)
  • This episode marks this new season's reference to a monkey: Sophie creates a charity (to use in the con) to help rescue the supposedly endangered Panamanian Monkey. Previous season's monkeys are: "The Two Horse Job", is the first mention of Elliot's Sapphire Monkey. "The Rashomon Job", we learned more about the Sapphire Monkey. "The Gold Job", Hardison named his con 'The Double Pronged Monkey Con'. "The Broken Wing Job", Hard ison tries to bond with a live snow monkey in a box by telling it a story. Also, According to the DVD Commentary for this episode, The Sapphire Monkey is the Artifact in question in the Japan plot.
  • Sophie refers to Parker being out of her depth during The Stork Job and Hardison's terrible cockney accent during The Ice Man Job.
  • The episode ends with the team setting up a new base in New Orleans. Hardison leaves to help Leverage International, and his foster sister joins the team on a provisional basis.
  • Harry reminds his boss about "that client who cut corners so his building collapsed, killing his construction crew." We meet this client in The Tower Job.
  • Parker taught Breanna how to tail someone when she was eleven
  • Harry is revealed to have a daughter
  • Breanna got the FBI knocking on Nana’s home. She was involved in stealing credit cards, ransomware attacks, and DOD intrusions. All the same stuff Hardison was into at her age.
  • Hardison tells Parker that Breanna idolizes her.
  • Hardison also tells Parker that she’s like the parent of all the foreign crews
  • It may be implied that Breanna’s not old enough to drink as Eliot takes the glass from her, shaking his head.

Trivia[]

  • After Parker pulls the bottom of her shirt down, Hardison refers to "the Picard tug." This is a reference to the way that Captain Jean-Luc Picard, of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), would often "tug" the bottom of his uniform shirt down after rising from a seated position; many fans calls this "The Picard Tug" or "The Picard Maneuver."
  • DJ COM4R4T ("Coma Rat") is a reference to noted EDM artist Deadmau5, who also wears a light-up mask.
  • Parker's reaction to the horse painting is a callback to Leverage: The Two-Horse Job, where it's revealed she has an irrational fear of horses.
