Leverage Wiki

You got out-hustled. Nothing to be embarrassed about. It's the circle of crime, man.

— Hurley

Old friend Hurley stumbles into the path of a Mark out for revenge on the crew. He must take point on one of the most delicate parts of the con — the Cool Off. Despite the crew’s help, the situation spins out of control into a brand new con, with a brand new victim.

Client[]

  • Jack Hurley

Mark[]

  • Clay

Summary[]

As Hurley and his team enjoy “The Gloat,” after a con, the mark escapes the police and runs into traffic, killing himself.

Hurley arrives at Leverage headquarters. The space is empty, and he triggers the sensors. Sophie explains to Hurley over the phone that their mark ran off before they could get the full three million. Clay runs into Leverage headquarters, wielding a gun, threatening to kill Hurley unless the con team gives him back his money. Thinking quickly, Hurley claims to be looking for them as well because they stole his money. Hurley introduces himself as “Mark”. It quickly becomes Hurley’s job to cool down Clay.

Hurley plays up taking down Eliot when he comes back to the base. Eliot tells Clay that the crew stiffed him too. Eliot tells Clay that “The blonde” (Parker) is on her way to his office to take the million he held back, so Clay goes after her. Clay brings Hurley to the Bayou Bluffs Real Estate offices. He explains they were just getting into development when things went south. He introduces Hurley to Denise, a deaf property salesperson, on her last day.

Parker  breaks into Eiger’s safe and steals a random folder to make the theft convincing. Clay and Hurley lose Parker in the vents and return to the office kitchen, where Hurley starts cooling Clay down. Clay ends up going to the police. Breanna and Harry get there first, dressed as detectives.

Clay goes after Sophie (undercover) to a motel room. Sophie tells Clay that Harry double-crossed her, taking all three million. Clay calls his Swiss bank to check the balance, and Breanna intercepts the call to transfer the last million back to the church. Sophie then offers Clay a chance to get Harry. But instead of rising to the opportunity, Clay breaks down in tears. Hurley runs in, and Clay tells him he was trying to help Denise.

Clay helped get Denise the job in real estate, moving her up from the valet parking desk. She sold a penthouse unit in an uninsured development, which got destroyed by a hurricane, and her client lost their investment. The Bayou Bluffs manager, Barry Eiger, threw Denise under the bus, which is why she is leaving.

Hurley later appeals to the team to help Clay as he sees himself in Clay.

With Hurley’s help, Clay finds Denise and starts to confess his love to her. Meanwhile, Eliot spots two contract killers in the office. Going through the decoy folder Parker stole, Breanna discovers that Denise’s client was a front for the cartel. Eliot takes out the two contract killers while the others escape.

Back at the headquarters, Parker reveals to Hurley that she sent Clay in his direction to help him find his way after Rio went bad.

Episode Notes[]

  • A Leverage crew known as the "Cyrano team" ran love cons in Italy. It was mostly unsuccessful and was disbanded in 2017.
  • Hurley references the famous line from Indian Jones "Raiders of the Lost Ark": "Snakes, why'd it have to be snakes?" replacing snakes with vents.
  • The episode reveals different ways the Leverage team members have cooled off their marks: Sophie is shown comforting a crying mark, Eliot helps a mark fix up a truck, and Parker pushes a mark off a roof.

Trivia[]

  • The Cyrano team is named after the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand. In the play, Cyrano woos a woman on behalf of a less articulate friend.
